Cricket often reminds us that dominance and victory are not always the same thing. Uganda’s dramatic tie against Namibia in the Capricorn Series was one of those contests where the margins were microscopic, the momentum constantly shifted, and individual brilliance from both sides produced a match worthy of a Super Over.
Although the hosts eventually emerged victorious after the tie-breaker, Uganda produced plenty of positives that demonstrated why they remain one of the competitive sides in the tournament.
The scorecard tells the story of an evenly matched contest. Both teams finished on exactly 123/7 from 20 overs, forcing a Super Over that eventually went the way of the Capricorn Eagles. But beneath that identical score lay two very different innings built on contrasting strengths, tactical decisions and key moments.
Uganda’s Bowling: Discipline First, Pressure Always
Uganda made the first important decision of the day by winning the toss and choosing to bowl. It proved to be the correct call.
The new-ball pairing immediately squeezed the Eagles’ scoring opportunities. Walaza Sarah and Consylate Aweko consistently denied boundaries, allowing Uganda to dictate the tempo through the Powerplay. The Eagles managed only 29 runs while losing two top-order wickets, forcing their middle order into rebuilding mode.
Sarah Walaza – Uganda’s Game Changer
If one player dictated the first innings, it was Sarah Walaza.
Her figures of 3 wickets for 18 runs in four overs were outstanding both statistically and tactically. More importantly, every wicket she claimed disrupted the Eagles at a crucial stage.
She first removed Green Kayleen before returning to bowl captain Sunè Wittmann just as the innings threatened to gather momentum. Then, in the final over, she dismissed the dangerous Arrasta Diergaardt after the batter had anchored the innings brilliantly.
Those breakthroughs were worth far more than the numbers suggest because they consistently forced Namibia’s batting line-up to restart.
Consylate Aweko’s Quiet Influence
While Walaza grabbed the headlines, Consylate Aweko produced perhaps the most underrated spell of the match.
Her four overs returned 1 wicket for only 19 runs, an economy of just 4.75. She removed Mekelaye Mwatile before the batter could build momentum and repeatedly dried up scoring opportunities during the middle overs.
Good T20 bowling is often about controlling the game rather than chasing wickets, and Aweko executed that role superbly.
The Turning Point Uganda Could Not Prevent
For nearly fourteen overs, Uganda controlled proceedings.
Then came one devastating over.
Sarah Akiteng, who had bowled economically earlier, ran into an inspired Wilka Mwatile. The over leaked 21 runs, with Mwatile smashing two fours and two sixes.
Those six deliveries completely transformed the innings.
Capricorn Eagles jumped from 61/4 to 82/4, changing the projected total from around 105 into one that eventually reached 123.
It was arguably the defining batting burst of the match because it gave the Eagles enough runs to defend later.
Uganda’s Chase: Built on Partnerships Rather Than Power
Uganda’s reply reflected patience instead of aggression.
Captain Janet Mbabazi and Stephanie Nampiina laid a stable platform, each contributing 20 runs, but both scored at strike rates below 85. Their partnership ensured Uganda avoided early collapse, although it also meant the required rate gradually increased.
Proscovia Alako Carried the Chase
The standout batting performance belonged to Proscovia Alako.
Her 44 from 39 balls, featuring six fours and one six, was comfortably Uganda’s most influential innings.
Unlike many T20 knocks built entirely on boundary hitting, Alako balanced aggression with responsibility. She rotated strike, punished loose deliveries and absorbed pressure while wickets fell around her.
She arrived after Uganda had lost their first wicket and guided the innings deep into the chase.
Without her contribution, Uganda would likely have fallen well short.
Her dismissal in the 18th over became one of the biggest moments of the contest because it exposed the lower order during the tense finish.
Middle Order: Good Starts, No Match-Winning Finish
Ritah Musamali added 17, while Esther Iloku chipped in with 9.
Neither innings was poor.
However, both ended just as acceleration became essential.
The inability of one middle-order batter to convert a useful start into a decisive finishing knock meant Uganda entered the final over needing every run available instead of already having the match under control.
What Uganda Did Well
One of Uganda’s greatest strengths was their discipline.
Remarkably, they conceded no extras while bowling a rare achievement in T20 cricket that reflected excellent control and execution.
Fielding also played a significant role.
Uganda consistently created wicket-taking opportunities, including an important run-out in the final over that prevented the Eagles from adding valuable late runs. Every run saved ultimately mattered in a match that finished level.
Where Uganda Struggled
Ironically, Uganda’s bowlers were more disciplined than their batters.
While the bowling unit conceded zero extras, Uganda’s innings benefited from 11 wides from the Eagles. Those bonus runs kept them alive throughout the chase, but Uganda still found boundary scoring difficult outside Alako’s innings.
The biggest challenge was finishing.
Three wickets fell in the last three overs, breaking momentum precisely when calm decision-making was required.

The Super Over was the result of both teams winning different phases of the game.

Despite losing the Super Over, Uganda’s performance was full of encouraging signs.
